I Prayed have prayed
Reading Time: 3 minutes

Pray for discernment about what is happening in our culture and for Christians to respond biblically to controversy.

But to you who are listening I say: Love your enemies, do good to those who hate you, bless those who curse you, pray for those who mistreat you. (Luke 6:27-28)

Lacking worthy menaces to fight, it is driven to find a replacement for racism. Failing this, what is left?

Even before President Trump’s election, hatred had begun to emerge on the American left—counterintuitively, as an assertion of guilelessness and moral superiority. At the Women’s March in Washington the weekend after Mr. Trump’s inauguration, the pop star Madonna said, “I have thought an awful lot of blowing up the White House.” Here hatred was a vanity, a braggadocio meant to signal her innocence of the sort of evil that, in her mind, the White House represented. (She later said the comment was “taken wildly out of context.”)

For many on the left a hateful anti-Americanism has become a self-congratulatory lifestyle. “America was never that great,” New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo recently said. For radical groups like Black Lives Matter, hatred of America is a theme of identity, a display of racial pride.

For other leftists, hate is a license. Conservative speakers can be shouted down, even assaulted, on university campuses. Republican officials can be harassed in restaurants, in the street, in front of their homes. Certain leaders of the left—Rep. Maxine Waters comes to mind—are self-appointed practitioners of hate, urging their followers to think of hatred as power itself….

The genius of the left in the ’60s was simply to perceive the new moral imperative, and then to identify itself with it. Thus the labor of redeeming the nation from its immoral past would fall on the left. This is how the left put itself in charge of America’s moral legitimacy. The left, not the right—not conservatism—would set the terms of this legitimacy and deliver America from shame to decency….

The left had important achievements. It did rescue America from an unsustainable moral illegitimacy. It also established the great menace of racism as America’s most intolerable disgrace. But the left’s success has plunged it into its greatest crisis since the ’60s. The Achilles’ heel of the left has been its dependence on menace for power. Think of all the things it can ask for in the name of fighting menaces like “systemic racism” and “structural inequality.” But what happens when the evils that menace us begin to fade, and then keep fading?

It is undeniable that America has achieved since the ’60s one of the greatest moral evolutions ever. That is a profound problem for the left, whose existence is threatened by the diminishment of racial oppression. The left’s unspoken terror is that racism is no longer menacing enough to support its own power. The great crisis for the left today—the source of its angst and hatefulness—is its own encroaching obsolescence. Today the left looks to be slowly dying from lack of racial menace….

White-on-black shootings evoke America’s history of racism and so carry an iconic payload of menace. Black-on-black shootings carry no such payload, although they are truly menacing to the black community. They evoke only despair. And the left gets power from fighting white evil, not black despair.

Today’s left lacks worthy menaces to fight. It is driven to find a replacement for racism, some sweeping historical wrongdoing that morally empowers those who oppose it. (Climate change?) Failing this, only hatred is left….

For Martin Luther King Jr., hatred was not necessary as a means to power. The actual details of oppression were enough. Power came to him because he rejected hate as a method of resisting menace. He called on blacks not to be defined by what menaced them. Today, because menace provides moral empowerment, blacks and their ostensible allies indulge in it. The menace of black victimization becomes the unarguable truth of the black identity. And here we are again, forever victims….

For the American left today, the indulgence in hate is a death rattle. (Excerpts from Shelby Steele article in Wall Street Journal)

The author of confusion is the god of this world. He is using his missionary’s to spread his will to steal, kill, and destroy. Today you are either a child of the True and Living God or your a child of Satan. The free gift of grace is available to all you call on Him in sincerity and in Truth. Today is your day Of salvation. Call on Him with all your heat and He will save you from the wrath coming on those who disobey Him.

The left has never been moral or a part of bringing morality to America. It has used lies, deception and twisted words to gain power, to usurp the rights of others, to enslave. I do not know where Mr. Steele gets his information, but it is not correct. The spirit of rebellion in the 60’s was rampant. The left seeks to control, by any means possible, and has become even more militant in recent years. I lived through that era, I was there and as I grew up I saw the hypocrisy of the democrats and left. MLK was a Republican, as were many before him. That party was founded by free black men and white men against slavery, in unity! The democrats/left have deceived many with their lies. The Republican party is teetering on the precipice, but I believe can be turned around with prayer and Christians running for office. If you are offended, pray, but know this, the truth sets us free. I refuse to swallow lies or allow untruths to stand as fact.

The above article is an educated opinion, and not scripture. It is a talking point and i found it to have merit. What comes to mind that is scripture is “let God be true and every man a liar” Rom 3:4; for only You, Lord, are our truth. No party tainted with the power that corrupts holds that truth that can set our hearts free. Only You, the embodiment of truth are our correct standard. Oh Lord lead us, guide us, speak loud enough for us to hear. Heal the division in the church and then lead us to be part of your healing of the division in our Land. In Jesus powerful name, Amen

God, what we have let loose into our American society is a spirit of divisiveness. Please, Father, deliver us from this spirit assault on all of us. May we learn to again have meaningful, respectful discussions and hear each other’s concerns. We are a nation that is in pain, broken, and needing a healing from you. Please overlook that we have abandoned you in our everyday dealings, forgive us and don’t give up on us. We are people who need you now, to the same degree we needed you when our nation was established. Pour out you grace, mercy, love, healing on us, Father, in Jesus’ name. We need unity from you to begin to solve our challenges. Thank you for listen, dear Father.

These commenters do not realize that Shelby Steele is an esteemed male black historian who has authored many books on American history. He has a deep understanding of American culture based on many years of research and personal experience. He is speaking from an historical, rather than a theological context.

There is so much to be said regarding the statements put forth in this article. The referenced scripture call for believers to love our enemies and to pray for them. You article speaks directly against this. You identify hate by the “left” but if now identifiable efforts of the “right.” I find no biblical reference to either agenda, but that of love as you referenced scripture suggests.

If the basis of you writing is to pray, give me prayer points to bring About the love of Christ and not an article of bashing a different opinion sirh no suggestive solutions of change by way of forgiveness, mercy and the grace of God.

Wow.
Lord, i pray Shelby would acknowledge you, for it is you who has given her a clear and precise mind to give the light of reason and logic to a chaotic mine field of political unrest.
I also wish to lift up to you the Women who have been so hurt by abortion, for i believe this personal wound causes them to be Pons in the hands of the left. Lord, you are our Great Healer, to you we look to heal our hearts and our Land. In Jesus name, Amen.
