Madison Mendoza, her feet aching and her face burned by the sun, wept as she said she had nothing to feed her 2-year-old son who she’d brought with her on the long trek toward the United States.

Mendoza, 22, said an aunt in Honduras had convinced her to join the migrant caravan, which she did two weeks ago in the capital of Tegucigalpa. The aunt said she’d have no problems, that people along the route in Mexico would help as they did for a large caravan that moved through the area in October.

But this time, the help did not come. The outpouring of aid that once greeted Central American migrants as they trekked in caravans through southern Mexico has been drying up. Hungrier, advancing slowly or not at all, and hounded by unhelpful local officials, frustration is growing among the 5,000 to 8,000 migrants in the southern state of Chiapas…. I pray that the people in the countries flooding us from the south will start reforming their own governments instead of trying to escape them. Their countries are as rich in possibilities as our country is in realities. I pray that God will strike down the evil doers in the governments and destroy the gangs that terrorize the citizens and assassinate the police. I pray that the United States will control its ravaging
appetite for drugs, trafficked sex and exploited labor. We are funding the criminals with our evil deeds. Some of us are innocent bystanders, a few of us are informed evil fighters, but too many of us are complicit in the forces driving people to our country.
I pray that God will raise up spokespeople and politicians who will advocate for solutions that take into account causes and effects. Judges 21:25: “In those days Israel had no king; everyone did as they saw fit.” In these days also, so I pray for God to bless the leaders here and abroad who will fight for justice and to raise up new ones who know the issues first hand because they have lived them. I pray that all along God has been preparing such leaders, just waiting for our prayers of repentance, reform and revival to bring them to our attention. Let our country be fertile with people to bring others to Christ and to both spiritual and material abundance.

“Surely you will summon nations you know not,
and nations you do not know will come running to you,
because of the Lord your God,
the Holy One of Israel,
for he has endowed you with splendor.” (Isaiah 55:5)
Amen.
