To call the State Department “the most secular department in our government” may sound harsh, but the statement did not come from me. It came from someone who works on the inside.
On a recent trip to Washington, D.C. I had the privilege of going to the State Department and meeting with some of the staff. Their revelations were both startling and disturbing.
“What many people don’t realize is that about 80% of the current staff are holdovers from the previous administration. It is the most secular department in our government,” they began as we asked them how we could pray.
“In addition, we are halfway through Trump’s first term and still half of his staff are missing because senior leadership appointments hinge on Senate confirmation.”
They went on to explain that if confirmations (or the lack thereof) continue at the current pace, it would be eleven years before all of Trump’s appointees would be approved.
Why? Because with the current process, there must be two different votes for passage of confirmation which includes thirty hours of debate allowed for each confirmation. You can see how the obstruction can be drawn out for such lengths.
We need to break off the obstruction through intercession and pray in President Trump’s nominees both in the State Department as well as judicial nominations at every level.
How to pray:
- That the nominees President Trump has recommended for senior leaders would move forward speedily. And that the obstruction tactics of those in the confirmation hearings would be brought to a halt.
And it will be said, “Build up, build up, prepare the road. Remove the obstacles out of the way of My people.” (Is 57:14)
- That the new leaders Trump has recommended, once in place, will be able to quickly assemble their staffs to replace those currently in the State Department who are still supportive of the past administration and actively hindering the progress of the present administration.
- Pray for Secretary of State, Mike Pompeo for protection over him and his staff and protection over his relationship with President Trump. Pray that he would be effective as he carries out President Trump’s foreign affairs policies.
But let all who take refuge in you be glad; let them ever sing for joy. Spread your protection over them,
that those who love your name may rejoice in you. Surely, Lord, you bless the righteous; you surround them with your favor as with a shield. (Ps 5:11-12)
- Pray for protection over Sam Brownback, the Ambassador for International Religious Freedom and his staff that they would be effective and courageous in their work but at the same time sensitive to the staff around them.
- Pray for the many nominees for judicial positions across our land that the obstruction of the appointments of godly men and women would be stopped. The same obstructionist tactics that we saw against Brett Kavanaugh are happening to other judicial nominees for lower court appointments across our land. It just does not hit the media to the same level and so it doesn’t hit our radar, but it needs to. Let this be our call to action and to prayer for them.
This is what the Lord Almighty says: ‘If you will walk in obedience to me and keep my requirements, then you will govern my house and have charge of my courts, and I will give you a place among these standing here. (Zec 3:7)
- Pray for the position of Assistant Secretary of State for Democracy, Human Rights, and Labor to be filled with a godly leader. This position (and many others) has been vacant since November 2017.
- Pray for boldness and wisdom for Christians who are working in the State Department that they will have courage to speak up and be bold in their witness.
Why do the nations rage and the peoples plot in vain? The kings of the earth rise up
and the rulers band together against the Lord and against his anointed one. Indeed Herod and Pontius Pilate met together with the Gentiles and the people of Israel in this city to conspire against your holy servant Jesus, whom you anointed. They did what your power and will had decided beforehand should happen. Now, Lord, consider their threats and enable your servants to speak your word with great boldness. Stretch out your hand to heal and perform signs and wonders through the name of your holy servant Jesus. (Acts 4:25-30)
May we look back in the next year and no longer be able to say that the State Department is the most secular department in our government, but rather the most godly!

Heavenly Father we praise You because we know that You are the Righteous Judge and Ruler over all the earth. Father forgive us who call ourselves by Your name for being religious and playing “church” instead of being salt and light. Father, may it stop here and now. Empower Your people to rise and awake and unify. To set aside petty differences and stand firm in prayer for our country as we await the return of our Redeemer and King. Cause those who obstruct Your will to be silenced and removed from office. Replace them with godly people who You’ve called to fill that spot. Heal our Nation. Restore our land to worship You and honor only You. May all other “gods” be consumed in Your Holy Fire.

Father God, forgive us. We repent Almighty God and Ruler over our hearts, souls and The State Department. Lord, protect every employee at the State Department. I lift up Sec. of State Mike Pompeo, every Ambassador, every Foreign Service Diplomat in every sector of the State Department, every instructor, every administrator, and anyone who steps through those doors, in Jesus Name. I declare and decree a hedge of protection around them, their families and their co-workers. I declare that no weapon formed against them will prosper. I command and send out your mighty Waring Angels to war on their behalf Lord God from the East, West, South and Northern Borders. Lord God bring godly men and women to the State Department. Reveal those people Father God to lead our State Department. Lord, I know there are godly people that you have strategically placed in the State Department. Strengthen them physically, spiritually, mentally and emotionally Lord. Remove every negative, unproductive employee who is not beneficial for our country Lord and your divine plans that you have for our nation. Replace them with godly men and women who have a godly call on their lives in Jesus Name. Father God, send your Holy Spirit and breath your anointing, godly fire upon the State Department. I bind up every evil spirit, every hex, vex, witchcraft, and all curses that are operating against our State Department. I call it null and void in Jesus Name. I demand and declare that it goes back to the pits of hell where it came from, never to return. It cannot come back with any other stronger minions in Jesus Name! I loose the spirit of peace, unity, love, and every godly spirit over every man and woman at The State Department, in Jesus Mighty Name! I declare and decree that bible studies, prayer chains, prayer groups and holiness will be the new standard at The State Department in Jesus Name! Amen, and Amen!

Father, I agree with these prayers to bring Christian people into the State Department & open the eyes of those who work there to receive Jesus as Lord and Savior. Father, in Jesus name, I ask You for more prayers of Your heart be given to us because those are the prayers You answ÷r! Jesus, send those in opposition to Your plans dreams, visions, divine encounters and divine appointments. Break off of them the hardness of heart and give them a heart of flesh, show them the demons controlling them and bring them such awareness of their lost condition that they cry out asking, “How do I get saved?” Jesus Your children working around them have the answers, help them be courageous enough to share You and Your salvation with them! Lord, bring awakening to them and total salvation to those who work there and their loved ones, in Your name Jesus I pray.

According to your own Word you declared, “I will give you the keys of the kingdom of heaven; whatever you bind on earth will be bound in heaven, and whatever you loose on earth will be loosed in heaven.” (Matthew 16:18-19).
I join with my brothers and sisters in agreement as we bind the secular forces of darkness who are in opposition to your will, and loosen your divine will to release your plans of good in the State Dept. and over your servants, Mike Pompeo and Sam Brownback, justices, and others whom you have called by your name to prevail over the administration of justice in this land.
Let not the forces of darkness, nor the deceitfulness of your enemies prevail over the goodness of the Lord. Show your divine might and overturn and expose the plans of the enemies of Christ. May we rejoice in the promises of the One who delivered us, as we faithfully look up to your Son!

Jesus my Jesus, I too did not realize the depth of secularism in our State Dept.Oh how I agree with the prayers already spoken. Root out the unjust, clean house, bring those who have a heart for YOU LORD and justice back into our government. In JESUS NAME AMEN.
We declare these requests are happening now. In the heavenlies things are changing and moving to line up with the Word of God for His glory. We do our part by praying and watch God do the heavy lifting and we rejoice when we see how He does it better than we could have ever imagined, loving and caring and offering freedom to everyone, even those who are His enemies. Heavenly Father, we pray that your will be done in the State Department here on earth, as it is in heaven. We believe that you will make a way for all appointments to be filled, especially in leadership positions and their staffs to be assembled quickly.
Lord, you work in ways we cannot see and we trust you to make a way that President Trump’s staff positions be filled and the important work of the State Department to go forward in a godly manner.

Thank you for this information about the state dept. I didn’t realize it was that bad. I also didn’t realize that so many of the Presidents staff positions were still vacant. No wonder he has such a hard time. Thank you for this opportunity to pray and agree with you and the others.
