Lord we pray for the Christians in Afghanistan. Give them courage and help them find other believers. Protect them from attacks and harm.

(Editor’s note – we will be highlighting countries where Christians are being persecuted and need prayer. Leave a comment and let us know that you prayed!)

Afghanistan is an Islamic state by constitution, which means government officials, ethnic group leaders, religious officials and citizens are hostile toward adherents of any other religion. This means any expression of any faith other than Islam is simply not permitted to exist. Officially, there are no Christians in this 99% Muslim state, apart from international military staff, diplomats and non-governmental organization workers. Afghan Christians (mostly those with a Muslim background) are in hiding as much as possible due to the fear of Christian persecution. To convert to a faith outside Islam is tantamount to treason because it is seen as a betrayal of family, tribe and country.

The term “civil society” is virtually unknown in Afghanistan, so any groups who advocate for social development, women’s issues, religious and ethnic minorities or human rights can do little to influence the country’s political development. Groups supporting the rule of law, participation in the political process or government accountability are quickly suspected of being agents of the West.

The security situation continues to deteriorate due to the influx of foreign militants who have pledged allegiance to ISIS. The radical Islamic Taliban have also increased in strength and their fighting units are present in more regions than in the last few years. At least half of Afghanistan’s provinces are either ruled or contested by the Taliban.

Even government officials are hostile toward Christianity—as are ethnic group leaders, leaders of local mosques and ordinary citizens. Anyone leaving Islam is seen as betraying their tribal community. In most cases, conversion brings shame for the family; family members will do all in their power to bring the convert back to Islam or to atone for the shame. Multiple, radical Islamic vigilante groups fight for the honor of their interpretation of their religion, and any deviation—even if only perceived—is highly dangerous.

All Afghan Christians are converts from Islam and are not able to live their faith openly. Very often, there is only one possible outcome for exposed and caught Christians: They will be killed. Neither radical Islamic groups nor a convert’s extended family show mercy in this respect. Converts are considered insane to leave Islam, and some may end up in a psychiatric hospital and have their houses destroyed. The family, clan or tribe has to save its “honor” by disposing of the Christian.

  1. Lord, we gather together with our Afghan believers in hiding. We pray with them that the veil of darkness and deception over their land will be broken through, that the light of Your truth may shine into their hearts and bring them the freedom and deliverance they so desperately need in the power of Jesus Christ!
Send Your angels to minister to Your children in hiding. Bring them the strength and sustenance they so desperately need to finish their course. Protect them from every evil intent of the enemy and cover them under the shelter of Your wings. May the light of Your glorious presence shine so strongly through them that those who are covered in darkness may be drawn like a moth to the burning flame of Your light and life. In Jesus’ name.

  2. Father, we pray that whole families will come into the kingdom together, through all the family having the same dream or vision, so that families will not retaliate by killing the one believer. we pray that in each of these families there will be miraculous signs and wonders so that their faith will be confirmed and unshakable. We pray for an angel of protection to be assigned over each family to guard them as they grow in their new faith. We ask for whole enclaves of believers to be established and for the Bible to be available so they can grow ever stronger. We pray that You will invade the Taliban and raise valiant warriors for the Lord, Davids who will be strong leaders and gladly risk all so that Afghanistan will be won for Jesus. You son died so that Afghans would be saved, so let His heart’s desire will be fulfilled. We ask for the Afghans who are expatriots in the USA to be won to the Lord and to pray with us for the salvation of their nation. In His name and for His glory.

  3. Thank you for posting this article. I have been involved with the persecuted church for over 20 years and so few American Christians know or care about this very important issue. Thank you so much and please continue !

  4. This is a replay of the book of Acts. Signs and wonders, Lord. Save all people in Afghanistan. In the name of Yeshua, I command – all of Afghanistan is born again. Amen. So be it.
