Editorial Note: Be sure and read this post carefully. This article details a couple forms of censoring. This does not mean that Bible verses are forbidden or wiped from Pinterest. It is subtle but it is real. We also can’t overlook the recent banning of Pro-life group Live Action from Pinterest. Please be informed before you comment-the details are important.
The whistleblower website Project Veritas is reporting the social media website Pinterest has been banning Bible verses and other Christian terms in its search engine.
“Project Veritas has received and published documents from an insider at Pinterest,” the website reported Monday. “The documents, which include product code, Slack messages, and internal policies, reveal terms and websites that Pinterest apparently censors.”…
“When I type in the word ‘Christian’ and something interesting happens,” O’Keefe told the insider who remains off camera and whose voice is disguised.
“‘Christian,’ the insider explains, “is being blocked from auto-complete.”
Pinterest is a publicly-traded social media company headquartered in San Francisco, CA with more than 300 million monthly users.
“The documents we obtained raise questions about whether or not these tech companies really operate like neutral platforms, as opposed to publishers with editorial agendas,” O’Keefe writes.
When Project Veritas asked Pinterest for a comment on the story, a company spokesman provided the following statement.
“Religious content is allowed on Pinterest, and many people use our service to search for and save Pins inspired by their beliefs. To protect our users from being targeted based on personal characteristics such as their religion, we have policies in place so that ads and recommendations don’t appear alongside certain terms.”
When asked why he came forward, the whistleblower told O’Keefe: “I think when public policies don’t match with how social media companies are actually implementing them, people have a right to know, people have a right to that transparency. And the thing is one person can make all the difference… one person can bring transparency to big tech.”…

Thank you for updating your story. It had been unclear, if not misleading, about the kind of censorship Pinterest uses against Christianity — as evidenced by the many Christians who have had no problems obtaining Bible verses and other Christian information from the site. As you have said, “that is not the kind of censoring that we are referring to,” but, instead, to Pinterest’s Autocomplete feature. Now it makes sense.
As to the banning of LiveAction (pornographic content? Oh, come on!) — that is certainly blatant censorship. We as believers need to continue to pray and raise our voices against these deceptions and biases, and continue to speak the truth in Christ!

I just typed Live Action and the Live Action Pro Life Pinterest page came up. ???
We do need to pray for Christians and Christian values in this country and across the world. In some areas Christians are being persecuted and even killed. In other areas, the USA included, Christians and our values are being mocked, misinterpreted, and sometimes suppressed. However, we need to know the truth and not blindly believe every news report that we hear.
IFA, I challenge you to research Steve Warren’s CBN news article for accuracy. Then, I challenge you to let us, your readers and prayer partners, know the real story. Follow up on it if it’s true, but please post a retraction if it’s found that your article was not based on factual reporting. Christians are representatives of Christ in this world. We must not be part of the fake news.

I use Pinterest for recipes, and other home ideas as well as clothing. If I want Bible I use my Bible or go to Bible sites for commentary. What is actual fact regarding Pinterest. I’m not really seeing it. Please help your supporters to understand the truth regarding this site.

I get a great number of resources for my Children’s Church lessons from Pinterest. I find all kinds of Bible verses in many different translations from their sources. If you go on their website, I’ll think that the whistleblower’s story isn’t accurate.
I checked it out. Whistleblower IS correct. The terms “Christian” and “Bible verses” has been blocked from Pinterest’s AUTOCOMPLETE feature, not from the search feature. So, yes you can type “Bible verses” and it will search just fine, but it DOES NOT give you a proper list to choose from prior (to hitting the enter key) — which shows that the words “Bible verses” has been blocked from autocomplete. If you want to see what should happen with AUTOCOMPLETE, first type “muslim” (but don’t hit the enter key, then erase and type “jewish”, erase it, then type “christian” (don’t hit the enter key). I’m on Pinterest and I have a board specifically for Christian quotes. Never have I been censored. This article makes me a bit disappointed in your site. I will definitely have to do a lot more research after reading articles here. 🙁

Kris, I just completed the task that you suggested. When I put in Christian I got a list of many items. Two specific were: Christian quotes & Christianquotes Inspriational. Both of these led to the same page. Personally, I didn’t see much of a difference between who each of the different religions were treated. There were more links in the Muslim and Jewish searches for food and fashion, but all three seemed to have links to quotes. I listened to the Whistleblower’s interview on Family Research Council, which seemed to lend truth to your article. It is very hard to distinguish the truth with all of this controversy. Maybe if you would have also posted the conversation from the Whistleblower. By the way, I also put live action.org in the search box of Pinterest and was given several pins to investigate. I looked specifically for one that referenced Liveaction.org. As I clicked through I was eventually taken to Liveaction.org website. Perhaps the uproar made Pinterest rethink it’s classification of this site as a pornography site? If this is true, maybe we Christians need to really start making some loud noise when we are labeled or blocked by censurship. We shouldn’t leave it up to one or two whistleblowers. I pray The Lord will lead us all to have courage to stand up for His Kingdom Work.
Cathy, that is definitely a hope–the more we make noise when these things happen, the more likely it is that they will react, remedy and potentially do it less. For instance, some of the same things happened with the movie Unplanned on several social media sites, including a google search which labeled it as “propaganda.” With a lot of people talking about it online and posting their disgust with the search bias, they made
the change to classify it as a documentary/drama. It is possible that some of these things have been altered due to the media attention Pinterest has received. This issue has been reported on many outlets. Thanks so responding what you found. We have to continue to be vigilant! Blessings!

I typed in “Bible Verses” and received a lot of beautifully illustrated quotes from Scripture and other related offerings. Don’t believe everything you read without checking the facts.

I just typed scriptures in Pinterest and it came up with no banning or restrictions. Not really understanding exactly how Pinterest is banning scripture according to this prayer post.

FaceBook, Google, and Amazon and this company needs to be regulated or even broken up like what the U.S. Govt had to do with Ma Bell in the 1980’s. The difference today, computers, software, the code, manipulation of people, ideas, and the propagandize of information. I have always trusted IFA for accurate information in regards to issues to pray about. I would also hope that you would investigate these things before making an issue of them. Pinterest is an extremely popular tool that many women use for inspiration & reference in crafting and other ideas and disparaging them based on false facts is would be a shame. At this point I have had no issue finding Christian based inspirational posts on Pinterest.

I use Pinterest a lot. I have tons of Christian inspiration and Bible verses in my saved folder. Not sure what Veritas found, and I believe their reporting, but I wonder if it’s an insider who made this up.
Pinterest has increased advertising among its posts, guess that’s the price if ‘free.’ Some I do not like, but I’d rather be free than censor those.

I typed Christian in the search bar on Pinterest and Christian quotes and info came up with no censorship that I can see.
I typed in Plaques of Bible Verses and immediately got them

I am so disappointed! I thought Pinterest was one place I could use social media without political garbage. How foolish of me to think that. I use it for a lot of things, recipes, decorating ideas, clothing styles & yes sayings. It makes me ponder whether I will continue using it.
I have never seen this and in fact, to the contrary, my board is full of amazing verses and inspiration from God.
While auto complete may be an issue, try other similar terms. You will find a wellspring of great biblical knowledge.
I am not seeing this. True, it doesn’t “auto-complete,” but you can still find Christian quotations and Scriptures with no problem.
The fact that they are hampering searches coupled with the outright removal of pro-life group Live Action and it’s founder’s personal page is evidence of manually altering Pinterest to hurt Christians.
