Sparks Mayor Ron Smith says he is against Drag Queen Story Hour and worked to get the children’s event at the Sparks Library on Saturday canceled.

It is the first time Drag Queen Story Hour, a nationwide program that started in San Francisco in 2015, will be held in Northern Nevada.

The event for children ages 3-8 will have two local drag queens reading stories, answering questions and posing for pictures.

“It doesn’t make any sense to  me,” said Smith, who was elected mayor of Sparks in 2018. Previously, Smith was a long-serving member of the city council.

Washoe County Library Director Jeff Scott, who has been at the helm of the library since 2015, said Smith’s concerns are unwarranted.

“It is storytime like any other storytime,” Scott said.

Smith said he reached out to Scott and County Commissioner Vaughn Hartung about stopping the event. Hartung has not immediately returned a request for comment.

“They told me there is nothing they can do,” Smith said.

The Nevada Family Alliance, a conservative group, has used social media to encourage people to contact the library and “urge them to stop this use of public funds to promote a controversial lifestyle.”

Scott said the event will not be canceled. He told the Reno Gazette Journal in June, “I am happy that we can provide events like these for our community.”
