Ask the Lord to aid the House legislators in seeking fair and useful regulations to help our nursing home facilities serve our elderly patients. May we as a nation honor and value life from the very beginning to the end of life.

“House lawmakers want the Trump administration to answer serious concerns they have about federal oversight of nursing homes.
Leaders of the House Energy and Commerce Committee wrote Monday to Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services Administrator Seema Verma on recent media reports of abuse, neglect, and patient harm at some nursing homes that participate in Medicare or Medicaid.
The lawmakers referred to Hollywood Hills in Florida, where 14 residents died in the aftermath of Hurricane Irma last year, with the deaths being attributed partly to no air conditioning and delays from staff in calling 911. The committee held a hearing on the nursing home incident in October.
CMS terminated Medicare and Medicaid participation for Hollywood Hills in October. The facility has since closed.
“We continue to work with the remaining facilities to do all that is necessary to ensure nursing home residents receive care in safe and stable environments,” an administration official told the Washington Examiner….
Verma said in a statement to the Washington Examiner that “patient safety is CMS’ top priority in nursing homes and all facilities that participate in the Medicare program.”
Committee Chairman Greg Walden, R-Ore., led the letter. GOP Reps. Gregg Harper of Mississippi, Michael Burgess of Texas, and Gus Bilirakis of Florida also signed on to the letter.” (Excerpts from Robert King’s article in The Washington Examiner)

I worked in an assisted living facility where he average person was fed on $200/mth that is $50 a week. This same amount is given to homeless people in our state per mth for food. the major difference, the homeless are not paying $2500/mth for their benefit. Census is the main concern. the majority of Administrators are unqualified, certified but not concerned with resident care. Most facilities that I have been in throughout our county are understaffed and the one that have full staff do not have the understanding needed to deal with the array of people that they encounter. Patients (residents) are over medicated and few have access to outside healthcare. Often times there is a recognizable odor of sewer gas from showers not being used. You have barbers and cosmotologists who charge patients for services not performed and there is no regulation on these services. There are town hall meetings where many are encouraged or distracted not to go. The bully residents and threaten them with expulsion for having opinions on how things should be. So not like they were 20 years ago. Dehydration and malnutrition are a great concern as residents do not have access to beverages when they want them but on a schedule.
Thank you, Patricia, for sharing specific atrocities that we can all pray about. Father God, we cry out to you on behalf of the elderly in our country who are living in terrible conditions in nursing homes like these mentioned. Jesus, have mercy, and show us specifically how to pray for our loved ones, for the elderly in our communities, and for local, state, and national policies to address this wrong.

Praise the Lord! I live in a nursing home and while thankful to be here am disappointed in the care many residents receive or lack. Some of the workers just want a paycheck and could care less about the patients and they don’t even try to hide their attitude.
