Without a religious awakening, the American system of government will not last much longer, according to a renowned political scientist who is not a Christian.
In an interview with Canadian podcaster and pro-life activist Jonathan Van Maren, Charles Murray, a political scientist and author of Coming Apart — an analysis of the widening economic and social disparities in the United States in the last half-century — said he believed that U.S. constitutional government is “dead as a doornail.”
Absent large-scale spiritual renewal, the U.S. might only exist for a few more decades, he said.
Murray holds the F. A. Hayek Emeritus Chair in Cultural Studies at the American Enterprise Institute, a conservative think-tank in Washington, D.C.
The political scientist believes that even those who call themselves conservative now believe things that the American Founders would find scandalous. At present, what is happening in the U.S. is undergoing a preview of what a “post-America” may be, he said.
“You cannot have a free society, a society that allows lots of individual autonomy without some outside force that leads people to control the self,” Murray explained.
The U.S. today is just another powerful, rich nation and the “American way of life” is now “meaningless,” he said.
“What was at the very core of the American founding — the character of the American people — was what in the eyes the founders made the experiment possible.”
Murray went to on to say that it would be great if what used to be called a “religious great awakening” would happen again and inspire substantial changes in behavior in the population, particularly if a new upper class joins in the revival of Judeo-Christian traditions. Yet the scholar is not holding out hope that such a thing will happen in the U.S. or in Europe, which is on course to die out culturally. However, he said, neither can ongoing secularization endure.
“I cannot believe that the secularization of society is going to continue indefinitely. We have never had an advanced culture, in the history of the world, that is nearly as secular as contemporary Europe. And I would say that is the test case,” he said.
He added that Americans ought to return to small towns and live “the traditional American way of life” and be active in their communities. . .

Our impression of this article is that a secular social scientist is asking the Church to impact America in the ways we once did. Do we need any clearer message to take seriously the commands to be holy and take the Gospel message to our communities and across the world? Christians are made to be different and make a difference. May God help us fulfill His purpose for us and our nation.

We have recently read of the great Awakenings that you brought to our nation through the preaching of people like Jonathon Edwards and George Whitfield. The second awakening was also brought about by a few students starting to pray and the move of your Spirit as others joined them. Admittedly, it seems that we are in the last of the last days. But even so, you promise to respond when your people cry out to you. We cry out to you for a continued spirit of prayer that won’t let go. We cry out for people to get back into Your Word in all its beauty and let it transform the way they live. We cry out to you for hearts that care more about your glory and important issues like saving babies and preserving the family than they do about sports and entertainment. Help us not to be satisfied with anything less than You and being part of what you are doing. We cry out to you for a spirit of repentance to descend upon us. Forgive us for being so crass and vulgar in this nation. Forgive us for the public defamation of your Name. Forgive us for the way we are entertained by people who hold you in low regard and treat your Name as a swear word. Forgive us for letting people be elected who celebrate killing babies up to birth and even after. Forgive us for letting people be elected who mock your Name and Your people. The inaction of the church has allowed schools to teach our children that they came from monkeys and they are just returning to dust with no hope of anything after death. We have allowed our universities to become bastions of godlessness and have done little praying or anything to impact that. We are watching the universities that call themselves Christian follow the same road. Please, Father, forgive our apathy. Forgive our willingness to let the youth of this country be led so astray from your truth. Forgive us for being so busy and distracted that we haven’t been people of prayer. “To you,Lord,I call;you are my Rock, do not turn a deaf ear to me. For if you remain silent, I will be like those who go down to the pit.Hear my cry for mercy as I call to you for help, as I lift up my hands to your most holy place.” Psalm 28:1-2.

A Call to Persevere

Lord I repent of my own sins and the sins of our Nation. Lord please help! Please guide the Church to pray for the lost souls and for Your judgement on those who deny You. Lord no matter what happens to Nations I pray the followers of Christ will continue The Great Commission, be light in the darkness and remember to share the hope of Christ to a hopeless World. Thank you Jesus! Amen
Every religion has a form of government. America’s founding generation’s religion was Christianity which astonished the world with Christian self government – the ability to regulate and restrain self according to scriptural principles of liberty with responsibility. These principles were taught by pastors resulting in liberty from the Law of sin and death and set their people unto the Law of Liberty. Internal liberty causes external liberty. A people governed internally by Christ produced a civil government based on voluntary restraint of self which produces Christian character which is reflected in a nation’s character.
America propagated these principles through her form of education. A biblically based education produces a liberty loving citizenry and advances liberty with responsibility. America’s education produced fruit known as Christian character-a necessary ingredient to sustaining a Christian Constitutional Federal Republic. A republic of the people, by the people and for the people who voluntarily consent to self restraint to obtain the greatest amount of individual liberty known to mankind in all of history.
To keep this republic and to deliver more perfectly the God-given rights of life, liberty, and happiness America must abandon the secular education it offers our youngsters. It must be replaced by the educational process that produces Christian character, lovers of Liberty and lives according to the Governor of Nations according to His Word – the great Political Textbook – the Bible. Ungodly education (secular) produces an ungodly nation. True Christian education produces and upholds a Godly character and a Christian nation.
Secular education produces an unbridled self and as self goes so goes the nation. The church must pray and act to reclaim its children to restore our nation. This will enable our nation to fulfill its Gospel purpose.
What a message of TRUTH! Thank you for your insight…the first level of godly governance is of self in Christ.

Lord, You are “The restorer of the breach.” Restore, renew and revive America and it’s
people I pray. Awaken the hearts of those who have been lulled into living for this world’s
pleasures rather than for Your pleasure. You have been so deeply patient with us;only a love
as deep and vast, a love that we could never fathom the depths of,could possibly see what You
see, hear what You hear, and still love us, still reach out to each and every heart to pray for
a change of the deadly course that so many are on. Thank You Lord for reminding us to pray more, much more.
“If My people who are called by My name will humble themselves and pray and seek My face
and turn from their wicked ways, then I will hear from heaven, and will forgive their sin
and heal their land.” 2 Chronicles 7:14
Only God knows his timeline of the end of days, but as the writer said have mercy Lord Jesus on your people call us to pray and seek your face!
Lord, I am reading this article with such sadness. Lord forgive my fear, unbelief and discouragement . Reading through the prophets and history, I see Your righteous judgement on nations who sinned. In judgement, Lord remember mercy. What a call for revival!!!! Pour out Your Holy Spirit to convict, renew and change hearts. In the mighty name of Jesus. Amen
