I Prayed have prayed
Reading Time: 2 minutes

Pray that the Lord will stand with the Church and give her strength in times of great need. 2 Timothy 4:17 gives us this hope.

“And call on me in the day of trouble; I will deliver you, and you will honor me.” (Ps 50:15)

“Four days after three Texas churches sued the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) for barring them from relief funding, the President took their side.

President Donald Trump tweeted Friday night:

Churches in Texas should be entitled to reimbursement from FEMA Relief Funds for helping victims of Hurricane Harvey (just like others).

Becket … applauded his remark, saying, “It’s great that the President sees that FEMA’s policy of treating churches worse than every other nonprofit is wrong.”

Jack Graham, a Trump adviser and Dallas pastor, applauded the President, but indicated some hesitancy around the case. “Christians and churches give & serve willingly but very thoughtful of the President to desire to support our work,” he tweeted.

…  “Yes, there are church-and-state issues here, but here’s another question: What church would ask for federal money to do the Lord’s work?” wrote John Fea, Messiah College history professor. He went on to say that churches should use their own resources to care for the needy and turn to FEMA only if they run out.

Trump donated $1 million toward Harvey relief efforts, with $100,000 going to Samaritan’s Purse, the aid organization run by Franklin Graham, another of the President’s evangelical advisers. As of last week, Samaritan’s Purse had five centers set up in churches across the Texas coast, and had gathered more than 2,100 volunteers and completed work on more than 200 homes.

Operation Blessing International also received a $25,000 donation from Trump.

The President visited the Houston area a week ago, making stops at a shelter and a Pentecostal congregation, First Church of Pearland, where volunteers were gathered. He also spent time at the White House with North American Mission Board president Kevin Ezell, who was representing Southern Baptist disaster relief efforts.

The three churches suing FEMA are hoping to hear a decision by the end of the month. “ (Excerpted from Christianity Today, reporting by Kate Shellnutt.)

Our Jesus always looks at the heart, Lord may the heart of those churches sueing FWMA be a heart that wants to bring back justice to America, to rid policies of persecuting the church or faith organization, or individuals. Lord i pray that their heart was not selfish, or entitlement minded, for you call us to serve you as our duty with no regard for how others respond to our act of obedience. Lord we have been idolators in this country, we worship wealth too often. Free us of this false lover Lord, and bring us back into chastity where you are our all in all.

To John Fea, I would say that churches have historically stood in the gap whether federal money helped them or not – the willingness of God’s people is not the issue, but the agency’s discriminatory attitude toward them. While God supplies the need, he typically uses people to do it – note how He used Persia’s heathen kings to finance Ezra and Nehemiah’s rebuilding of Jerusalem and the temple.
