Learn to hear and discern God’s voice
“I keep asking that the God of our Lord Jesus Christ, the glorious Father, may give you the Spirit of wisdom and revelation, so that you may know him better. I pray also that the eyes of your heart may be enlightened in order that you may know the hope to which he has called you, the riches of his glorious inheritance in the saints.” (Ephesians 1:17-19, NIV)
To be effective in intercession requires ongoing wisdom and revelation. It is our relationship with the Spirit of God that enables us to know, on a daily basis, what the Father is doing and where He is leading. As we become intentional in listening to the Holy Spirit, the gifts of the Spirit will be available to us, bringing greater clarity to our assignments and strategies.
There is a great need in the Body of Christ today to rightly understand the purpose and function of the gifts of the Spirit which can aid us in our journey. As we become more familiar with the person of the Holy Spirit and His means of communication, we will learn to recognize His voice, activity, and plans. We can grow in discernment and become effective societal change agents through strategic prayers and intercession.
Especially in the preparation phase of transforming revival, the prophetic voice of the Holy Spirit is needed to direct our path. Many times we do not know how to pray, but we have a Comforter and Guide who empowers us to pray in the spirit and intercede with groans that we do not understand (Romans 8:26). The power of our prayers is not in the wording or crafting of the prayers. It’s the power of the Holy Spirit, energized by our faith that releases God’s will in our lives.
Understanding and operating in the gifts of the Spirit also provides the tools needed to discern the specific plans of God for our individual communities. The adventure of hearing the corporate word of the Lord draws the attention of heaven as we learn what true unity is all about. It’s the bond of the Spirit that knits our hearts to His as we learn to hear Him together.
