Interview with Doug Abner from Manchester, Kentucky

Manchester experienced a supernatural visitation in the spring of 2004 during a community-wide march standing against a deadly drug epidemic that was killing their children. Following this time of repentance in the city park, over the next six years they experienced transformation throughout their community with widespread salvations, miracles, healings, and even the very land itself being restored and healed. Their story was documented in the video, "An Appalachian Dawn," produced by The Sentinel Group in 2010.

In a recent interview with Pastor Doug Abner, we asked him to reflect on his community's journey, including the season of visitation and subsequent transformation.

What have been the biggest lasting effects of the visitation your community experienced in 2004?

Renewed HOPE throughout our community that anything can change and God can do anything.

  1. The entire community working together, not just the churches.

  2. Clean elections devoid of extortion, crime, and dishonesty.

  3. The Body of Christ learning what it means to be truly Christian.

  4. A steady increase of missionary activity, both within and outside the U.S.

As you look back on that journey, what were the key elements that brought your community to that breakthrough?

  1. Desperation brought us to a level of prayer we had never entered before.

  2. The fear of the Lord changed our hearts and expectations.

  3. The fear of the Lord diminished the fear of man and gave us the courage to face our enemies.

Are our prayers really making a difference?

One pastor's testimony of effective intercession for his community...

Lyman Eddy
Pastor Lyman Eddy is a member of Transform Leesburg, a community prayer group pursuing God's Presence in Loudoun county in northern Virginia. He shares the story of a recent visit from an out-of-town evangelist who found an open heaven over their community...

"Loudoun County, VA, has had the distinction of being the wealthiest, fastest-growing county in the U.S. for the past few years. There has almost always been a prevailing spirit of political correctness that has worsened, hindering any conversation about spiritual things, especially when it got personal. The Lord has truly been hearing our prayers for 'laborers into the harvest' and 'softening the hearts of the unbelieving.'"

Lyman tells of how an unexpected, last-minute ministry opportunity with a traveling evangelist ended up being a fruitful result of persistent prayers for the spiritual climate to change over their city. Lyman shares what the Lord did...

"The one meeting we had arranged for was a Sunday morning service. Nothing really notable happened then, but the next day the evangelist and his wife went to Chick-Fil-A and led two tables of Hispanic people into prayer for salvation. Then they ministered to a table of high school boys all of whom prayed, and when asked by the couple if they felt pressured, said "no." One boy was crying and thanked them for helping him because his girlfriend just broke up with him. He was devastated, and to know the Lord loved him made it all better.

"They then led a deputy sheriff into praying a salvation prayer and afterward were approached by a Hispanic pastor who thanked them profusely for what they had been doing in the restaurant even though the hospitality host was clearly upset by their activities. As a result, this pastor (who had been previously disconnected with the broader church community) called some of his friends in the area and the couple ended up extending their stay through the next weekend, preaching in three Spanish-speaking churches and ministering to over 1,000 people in the process. While taking walks around the Freedom Center and surrounding neighborhoods, they led another deputy sheriff to Jesus as well as the neighbor directly across the street whom they met when he came out to get his mail.

"During their stay, they also led a Leesburg psychic to Jesus in her own shop near the Court House. A trip to Wegman's grocery store turned into a number of people praying for salvation, along with another visit to Chick-Fil-A. While going to Big Lots and Ross stores, they led several customers and a store employee through the salvation prayer. Then, going out to their car, they came on an emergency ambulance in the parking lot and led the crew there into eternal life.

All told there were well over 40 people who prayed with them for salvation just as they walked around - no teams and no agenda to get people into church.,,just striking up conversations and asking two questions: 'Did anyone ever tell you that God loves you and has a wonderful plan for your life?' and 'If you were to die today, where would you go?'"

Lyman concludes his testimony with this telling remark:

"This was amazing. In 32 years of ministry here I've never seen anything like this before. I now have a really positive hope that is becoming solid faith that we, here in this county, will experience a powerful move of God - even if it is 'very difficult for a rich man to enter the kingdom of God.'"

Highlights from Alistair Petrie’s book,Releasing Heaven on Earth

“Releasing Heaven on Earth”

There are 1,717 references to the word "land" in Scripture...The land does not "belong to us," but we belong to it. It is part of our inheritance. (I Kings 21:3-4) We are in covenant relationship with the land.

  • Four ways that the land is defiled (Ezra 9:11, 12)

    • Idolatry, Immorality and Fornication, Bloodshed, and Broken Covenant

  • Strongholds that are received and transferred from person to person are transferable to churches, communities,  cities, and nations.

  • Evil spirits will generally remain entrenched in an area...until their original invitation is revoked!

  • Either resistance or receptivity to the Gospel in any given community is intimately linked with the strongholds that exist in the lives of the people in that community.

  • Every city has a "spirit" about it - an almost palpable essence distinct from every other city. It is a combination of that city's history, surroundings, and systems, even people who have moved through it, and events that have occurred in it. If we cannot name, understand, and cope with our city's spirit, we cannot hope to understand either the complexity of our city's spiritual warfare or the scope of ministry to which the Church is called.

  • The health of the Church can be measured by (some of) these questions:

    • Is there a history of church splits within the fellowship?

    • Is there a history of leadership problems or relationship issues within the board/council/elders?

    • Is there a history of music or worship problems?

    • Is there a history of constant financial worries or frustrations?

    • Has it been hard to maintain spiritual growth?

    • What is the historical involvement of other churches in interchurch events?

    • Has there been a history of sickness or illness, especially within leadership families?

    • Has there been effective conversion growth (not transfer or biological growth)?

  • It is one thing to cleanse our lives and the land; it is quite another to maintain and occupy what we have gained. It requires being attentive to misunderstandings in relationships in order that the enemy not achieve any foothold.

Russia was pointedly disinvited from a gathering ... of the exclusive Group of Seven nations, but it was clear that the international big chill imposed on Moscow over its actions in Ukraine is starting to thaw President Obama and other leaders meeting here offered an olive branch to Russian President Vladimir Putin, inviting him to begin to resolve the seven-month Ukrainian crisis and rebuild trust with the West after an
estrangement that invited comparisons to the Cold War.

... A joint statement from the G-7 condemned what it called Russia’s illegal annexation and “unacceptable interference” in other areas of Ukraine and said the body will refuse to recognize Crimea as a part of Russia.

“We stand ready to intensify targeted sanctions and to implement significant additional restrictive measures to impose further costs on Russia should events so require,” the statement said. U.S. officials later said certain provocative actions such as Russian troops crossing the border into Ukraine would trigger more punitive measures. But they would not define exactly what Putin would have to do, nor would they set an exact deadline.

“Clearly sectoral sanctions are on the table,” said Ben Rhodes, the deputy national security adviser for strategic communications. “If we see the status quo continuing, we are going to move.”

Obama and Cameron acknowledged that there are differences of opinion among the 28 European Union nations and that rallying them all to favor stricter sanctions would be difficult.

(Excerpted from the WASHINGTON POST)

We encourage intercessors to meditate on the Isaiah passage below. While it reads like poetry, the words are prophetic, inspired by God’s Spirit and given by revelation. As we pray into world affairs, let us remember that there is only one nation on earth that is bound to the Lord God by His specific covenant, and that is Israel (not the G7, including our own U.S.). The people of all nations, however, are precious to God, who loves them in Christ, and — through Christ — is not willing that any should perish.

“Who has directed the Spirit of the LORD, or as His counselor has taught Him? With whom did He take counsel, and who instructed Him, and taught Him in the path of justice? Who taught Him knowledge, and showed Him the way of understanding? Behold, the nations are as a drop in a bucket, and are counted as the small dust on the scales; look, He lifts up the isles as a very little thing.” (Isaiah 40:13 -15)
