A Defense Department report released Monday says the Chinese government is rapidly  expanding the military, developing long-range weapons to expand its global reach. The yearly report, which is required by Congress, was released five and a half months late.

U.S. officials express concern that China is being secretive about its military growth, and that it continues to reject military relations with the U.S. The Chinese government suspended those relations earlier this year, following the announcement that the U.S. would sell over $6 billion of weapons to Taiwan, an American ally that China considers part of its own territory.

Congress Approves War Funding

July 28th, 2010 by Nathan Curby

Pray for safety, success, and mental and emotional strength for U.S. troops in Afghanistan and Iraq.

The House of Representatives on Tuesday approved a $58 billion measure to fund the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan, despite growing opposition to the wars among congressional Democrats. The House passed the Senate version of the war funding bill after the Senate rejected tens of billions of dollars in domestic initiatives that the House had included in its original version.

The measure received broad Republican support, with only 12 Republicans voting against it, but 102 Democrats opposed the bill, more than twice the number who voted against a similar measure last year. “What has changed in my mind is I am so discouraged at the chances of our commitment in Afghanistan succeeding that I think it’s time to say, no more,” said Rep. Henry Waxman (D-CA).

The vote seemed to be unaffected by the Sunday release of 91,000 secret documents about the Afghanistan war. The documents, however, gave a voice to opponents of the war who say they paint a picture of a war that is rapidly deteriorating. President Obama argued that the documents did not introduce any new information to the debate,  and that they reinforce his decision to make a change in strategy, sending 30,000 new troops to Afghanistan. The bill passed Tuesday will partially go to pay for those new troops.

U.S. Congress Backs Israel, More Flotillas to Gaza

Lebanon says it will retaliate against Israel should Israel use force against Lebanese ships attempting to break the Israeli blockade of Gaza, while Israel maintains that it will use “any means necessary” to prevent any ships from delivering cargo to Gaza. A Lebanese flotilla is set to sail to Cyprus, and then to Gaza to deliver aid.

Quartet envoy and former British Prime Minister Tony Blair urged anyone wanting to send aid to Gaza to use the legitimate land routes, saying Israel has a right to protect itself from rockets being delivered to Gaza. Israel last week relaxed its restrictions on humanitarian aid entering Gaza by way of land.

Meanwhile, Israel received large support from the U.S. Congress for its actions in raiding a Gaza-bound flotilla in late May. Eighty-five Senators and 298 Congressmen have signed a letter to the President expressing support for Israel, which says, “We fully support Israel’s right to self-defense.” The letter goes on to say that Israel did its best to make sure humanitarian supplies reached Gaza peacefully, but responded appropriately when Israeli commandos boarding one ship were “brutally attacked with iron rods, knives, and broken glass.” Nine activists were killed in the raid, and several Israeli commandos were seriously wounded.

Israeli Prime Minister Benyamin Netanyahu’s National Security Adviser, Uzi Arad, said Tuesday that the outlook is bleak for a U.S.-negotiated peace agreement. U.S. President Barack Obama is scheduled to meet with Netanyahu July 6 to discuss the peace process in Israel. The two were scheduled to meet June 1, but that meeting was postponed when the flotilla raid happened on May 31.

Pray in Agreement on this National Day of Prayer

James 5:16 - used with permission (c) www.timbotts.com

REPENTANCE | SURRENDER

Take time on this National Day of Prayer to “present your body a living sacrifice” (Rom 12:1-2; 6:13), and to personally seek the Lord, asking the Holy Spirit to search your heart and to point out sin and areas where you “fall short” of doing the will of God. Surrender yourself afresh for the Lord’s purposes. Use the 2 Timothy 3:1-5 listing of 18 areas of sin and self-centeredness for personal reflection, repentance, and intercession.

ALL IN AUTHORITY

Engage in private prayer and participate in local public prayer observances. Repent for national sin and earnestly intercede for “all in authority” (1 Tim 2:1-2)-for President Obama, his Cabinet and administration, the U.S. military, Congress, and Supreme Court. (Use the “Top 130 U.S. Officials” bookmark.) Pray for your Governor and other state officials as the Lord prompts. Pray for local city, township, village or county officials, judges, sheriff and police, school administrators, security, emergency, fire, rescue and public health workers, civil magistrates, and support staff. Join in praying the special prayer written by evangelist Franklin Graham.

LORDSHIP OF CHRIST

All IFA “partners-in-prayer” are asked to pray in agreement and affirm the Lordship and Supremacy of Jesus Christ on this National Day of Prayer. Let us repent for the falling away from obedience and sound doctrine in church life. Joyfully affirm the finished work of Christ, His preeminence and dominion. (Col 1:12-20, 2:15)
