PM OLMERT WON'T RUN IN PRIMARIES, WILL RESIGN AFTER NEW GOVERNMENT IS FORMED

Prime Minister Ehud Olmert, in a nationally broadcast message from his residence, announced that he would not compete in the Kadima party's upcoming primary, and would resign from office after a new government is formed. With six criminal investigations opened against him on various corruption charges, Olmert evidently decided that this would be the most graceful way out.

THE CONTENDERS TO BE ISRAEL'S NEXT PRIME MINISTER:

Tzipi Livni, Shaul Mofaz, and Bejamin Netanyahu are the top three politicians most likely to succeed Prime Minister Ehud Olmert.

Tzipi Livni - Foreign Affairs Minister. A lawyer who was first elected to the Knesset, Israel's Parliament, in 1999. Left the Likud Party in 2005 and helped form the Kadima Party. Critical of Ehud Olmert's handling of the 2006 Hezbollah war. She is favored to become prime minister.

Shaul Mofaz - Minister of Transportation. Mofaz served a distinguished career in the Israeli Military and was promoted to major general in 1994. He served as the minister of defense from 2002 until 2006. Member of Kadima Party. In June, Mofaz said Israel would attack Iran if they continued their nuclear weapons program.

Benjamin Netanyahu - Chairman of the Likud Party and Olmert's top political rival. Served as prime minister from 1996-1999. If elected, vows to "bring down" Hamas in the "terrorist enclave" of Gaza. Netanyahu has called for general elections to be held now. (Israel Ministry of Foreign Affairs, AP, Jerusalem Post 7/31/08)

Intercede for political and spiritual leaders of Israel and the United States - that every decision, action or plan to pressure Israel to give up land or evacuate its people from any territory would be frustrated and abandoned.

May God raise up leaders in the U.S. and Israel who would support His end-time purposes for the Jewish people. Intercede for Messianic believers in Israel and for the establishment of religious freedom.

Intercede for the revelation of Jesus as Messiah in the Middle East and for "the peace of Jerusalem." (Ps 122)

Israeli Deputy Prime Minister Shaul Mofaz:

IRAN HEADING TOWARD NUCLEAR 'BREAKTHROUGH'

"We don't want war, we want peace," Mofaz said.

"But we will not let the second Holocaust take place."

Iran is on a path toward a "major breakthrough'' in its nuclear program that is "unacceptable," Israeli Deputy Prime Minister Shaul Mofaz told a Washington audience today. "It is an existential threat,'' Mofaz said at a forum on Iran at the Washington Institute for Near East Policy. "We have to make sure we are prepared for every option.''

Mofaz is heading the Israeli team taking part in a strategic dialogue with the U.S. this week in Washington, a forum in which the sides meet every few months to discuss regional threats.

Israel is seeking to be integrated into an American early warning system to help alert it to the firing of long-range missiles in the region. Iran test-fired such a missile earlier this month. (Bloomberg 8/1/08)

ISRAEL NEEDS RAIN DESPERATELY

Lord God Almighty:

- Perform a miracle in this season and replenish the water supply.

- Give the leadership wisdom to know how to meet the water needs.

- May the people be responsible in the use of their water.

- Fill the Sea of Galilee and the aquifers to normal levels.

- May Israel trust in You and have vision for their water demands now

and in the future. As You are bringing Your people back to the land,

they need water. (Intercessors for Israel www.ifij.org)

ISRAEL: WORST WATER CRISIS IN THE NATION'S HISTORY

Israel's water problems look grave with the Kinneret (Sea of Galilee)

dropping to new lows. Jordan suffering from severe drought.

The water problem in Israel is "very serious," said Uri Schor, spokesman for the Water Authority, which last Tuesday released a short-term emergency plan to stem the "worst water crisis in the nation's history."

The plan will raise prices on water used for gardening to reduce usage and will pump water from tributaries that flow into the Kinneret. "The main concern is to cut down the demand for water," Schor said. In addition, the Water Authority plans to invest NIS 12 billion in infrastructure, desalination, sewage treatment and conservation education over the next five years.

Some experts do not think the emergency plan will be effective. "We have no other plans [this year] except to increase as much as possible desalination of sea water and brackish water, to stop pumping from Lake Kinneret, restrict the pumping from the acquifers, and hope that God will be kind and nice to us next year," said Eilon Adar of the Zuckerberg Institute for Water Research.

Jordan is also suffering from severe drought after an especially dry season drained the dams that usually supply the country with water. Jordan, where water sources are already scarce, will be left to rely largely on water pumped in from Israel and Syria. (Haaretz)

Whoever would draw near to God must believe that He exists

and that he rewards those who seek him. - Hebrews 11:6

Never say, 'I've had enough. What's the use of believing?' That would

be throwing away the crown which will be granted to those who

keep faith. Say instead, 'I won't give up, for You are alive,

my Lord and my God. You see me, and You will not let me

be tempted beyond my strength. I trust in You!'

HOMELAND SECURITY

Let us agree in prayer that the Lord will expose and thwart the spread of nuclear materials, devices, missiles, and bombs.  Pray for all in intelligence agencies who are "on watch" against nuclear, biological, and chemical terrorist devices and plans.  Pray that any terrorists who would be attempting to detonate nuclear or other weapons of mass destruction be exposed, arrested and brought to swift justice and to redemption.

Pray for wisdom for security directors in U.S. cities.  Remember borders, ports, nuclear and chemical facilities, roads and infrastructures, energy grids, stadiums, fairs and large public gatherings. Pray that our enemies would fail to break through.

15 DAYS TO GO

THE CALL DC AUGUST 16, 2008

A brief glance at the headlines of our daily newspapers exposes the frailty of the moral fabric of our nation as the corruption of sin digs its claws deeper and deeper into the hearts and minds of our young people.

Abortion continues to claim over 1.6 million unborn lives every year in the U.S., wiping out nearly one-third of an entire generation born since 1973.

The growing slave trade of pornography, homosexuality, human trafficking, and sexual perversion - not only accepted by the culture, but now shamelessly promoted by it - has claimed countless young men and women, pilfering the Kingdom of the Lord's inheritance.

In 2000, 400,000 people, both young and old, gathered on the National Mall in Washington, DC to fast and pray believing the dream that a nation can change. That gathering and many others have imprinted tens of thousands of young people, initiating a 24-hour prayer revolution and inspiring a dream in their hearts that they could be a voice and real agents for change. Our nation continues in crisis and we feel it is time for TheCall to go to a national scale in another historic gathering in our nation's capital.

TheCall isn't a conference or a festival; it is a solemn assembly - a gathering of all ages, races and denominations. The 12 hours of TheCall are spent primarily before the Lord in the place of repentance, prayer, and worship. The hour is late and the time is urgent. Our nation is in desperate need of revival. We are seeing some signs of God moving, but we do not have what we need. Full-scale revival is only ushered in through the collective body of Christ uniting in repentance and prevailing prayer.

When there seems to be no remedy, when there seems to be no hope for a nation, God still has a holy prescription . . . God has a dream. "Blow the trumpet in Zion, gather the people, call a fast." (Joel 2:12-18)

See you from 10 a.m. to 10 p.m. at the DC National Mall on Saturday, August 16th! Pre-Call conferences are also convening.

U.S. SENDS $48 BILLION FOR AIDS AS FAMINE LOOMS

With the stroke of a pen Wednesday, President Bush did more for the battle against AIDS than any other leader, past or present.

The new law allocates an unprecedented $48 billion over the next five years to help treat and prevent AIDS, tuberculosis, and malaria. Of those funds, $39 billion is slated exclusively for the fight against AIDS, up from the $15 billion spent by the President's Emergency Plan for AIDS Relief (PEPFAR) over the past five years.

In the Horn of Africa - where the global food crisis and a current drought threatens to leave more than 15 million people hungry - aid workers and officials are concerned that Bush's quest to leave a legacy is overshadowing the most pressing needs.

"What is the use of keeping people alive with AIDS if they are just going to die of starvation?" says one high-ranking U.S. official in Addis Ababa.

KEEPING TOBACCO FROM RAVAGING THE DEVELOPING WORLD; COULD KILL 1 BILLION THIS CENTURY

Diseases caused by tobacco killed an estimated 100 million people during the 20th century and could kill 1 billion in the 21st if nothing is done to restrain tobacco companies from pushing their products in the developing world. Those companies show no sign of slowing their marketing campaigns on their own; Philip Morris International's sales, for example, were up 18.5 percent this year over the same period last year in Eastern Europe, the Middle East and Africa. Tobacco companies are bringing a new public health disaster to countries that can least afford one.

In its efforts to hook new smokers, the tobacco industry continues to outspend the public health community. But thanks to stepped-up public health advocacy, not all the trends are negative; more countries, for example, are banning smoking in public places (Washington Post 7/31/08)

WAR IN IRAQ | WAR IN AFGHANISTAN

Pray that wisdom and strategy be granted to U.S. commanders in Iraq and Afghanistan. Intercede for Afghan President Hamid Karzai, the Afghan government,  Iraqi President Jalal Talabani (Kurdish), Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki (Shiite Muslim), the Parliament, and all officials that a form of good government representative of all Iraqi and Afghan socio-religious ethnic groups is established and maintained. Intercede for all troops deployed and for their families-for protection, good health and morale. Intercede for all Christians and churches in both countries. (1 Tim 2:2)

CAN IRAQ'S NEW CALM HOLD?

July could see fewer American fatalities in Iraq than any other month

since the war began in March 2003.

After more than a year of taking a wait-and-watch approach to the surge of US forces in Iraq, military commanders and independent experts now seem more confident that it could be the beginning of the end for the insurgency in Iraq.

Top US commanders have said the surge of forces will have met their goals only if the improved security on the ground is "irreversible." The fear remains that the gains could all slip away if the Iraqi government doesn't cement the progress with political reconciliation on key issues and an increased level of governance.

Only ten of 18 provincial governments hold lead responsibility for security. And, according to the Defense Department, less than 10 percent of Iraqi security forces were at the highest levels of readiness and therefore capable of conducting military operations without U.S. support,

While the government of Iraq has passed major legislation, there is still disagreement over key issues such as sharing of Iraq's vast oil revenues, disarming militias, and holding provincial elections, scheduled for this fall. (CSM 7/31/008)

U.S. HOUSE FANS THE OLYMPIC FLAMES

They may have succeeded at reducing the smog, but China hasn't managed to clear the air on its record of human rights abuses.

Mere days before the Opening Ceremonies in Beijing, the U.S. House hopes to take one last stand against the violent practices of this year's Olympic host.

This week,  representatives passed a resolution (419 to 1) introduced by Rep. Chris Smith (R-N.J.) that condemns the regime for its record on coerced abortion and sterilization, repression in Tibet, and support of likeminded tyrants in Myanmar and Sudan. Although Democrats play down the horrors in China, pastors continue to suffer for their faith under the brutal practices of the government. Unfortunately, persecuted Christians are not mentioned in the resolution, but it wasn't for lack of trying.

Family Research Council (FRC) has never heard back from the State Department on the plight of the Chinese pastors now sentenced to remote labor camps. Although our pleas have been ignored, it appears that those of a small group of Chinese-American Christians have not. President Bush met with five leaders of China Aid before his trip to the Games. If the President insists on attending the Olympics, we continue to encourage him to speak openly about the need for religious freedom and accountability on human rights. (Family Research Council)
