Memorial Day as a day of prayer for permanent peace

A Proclamation

by the President

of the United States of America

 

On this solemn day our country unites to pay tribute to the fallen, who demonstrated the strength of their convictions and paid the cost of freedom. We pray for the members of our Armed Forces and their families, and we ask for God's continued guidance of our country.

 

In respect for their devotion to America, the Congress, by a joint resolution approved on May 11, 1950, as amended (64 Stat. 158), has requested the President to issue a proclamation calling on the people of the United States to observe each Memorial Day as a day of prayer for permanent peace and designating a period on that day when the people of the United States might unite in prayer.

The Congress, by Public Law 106-579, has also designated the minute beginning at 3:00 p.m. local time on that day as a time for all Americans to observe the National Moment of Remembrance.

ISRAEL'S HISTORIC ACHIEVEMENT

To think of Israel as 60 years old may be wrong when its enemies seek to portray it as an alien usurper. In fact, the Jews have lived in the Land of Israel for over 3,300 years, since 1312 BCE. They had lived there at least 1,800 years before the Arab conquest of 635 CE, which lasted only 22 years. Jerusalem was the Jewish capital for over 3,300 years and never was the capital of any Arab or Muslim entity. King David founded Jerusalem; Muhammad never set foot in it. Jews pray facing Jerusalem, and Muslims face Mecca. Jerusalem is mentioned hundreds of times in the Old Testament and not once in the Koran. The Jews have never had any other national homeland.

The Jews who became Israelis have cultivated desolate lands with one of the world's most innovative agricultural economies; they have established legal systems that protect civil liberties against the backdrop of the most lethal security threats. They have made a home for the world's largest Jewish population, passing America. The realization of the dream that Israel represents with its rebirth has evoked the spirit of kinship and emotional association with those who share the Judeo-Christian community throughout the world. ISRAEL'S "PEACE" NEGOTIATIONS WITH SYRIA

 

O Lord God Almighty, May the negotiations for the Golan Heights come to nothing; may the Golan Heights never return to Syria. Expose and stop all false peace negotiations. May the fear of God come upon the Olmert government to focus on and act upon Your prophetic agenda for the land of Israel. (Intercessors For Israel 5/23/08 www.ifij.org)

 

Israel and Syria are scheduled to begin indirect negotiations for a peace agreement in Istanbul through Turkish mediators in a few weeks.

 

Syria's Foreign Minister Walid Moallen says, "Syria cannot progress one step forward in negotiations before it receives assurances that Israel will fully withdraw from the Golan Heights." (65% to 70% of Israelis are against ceding the Golan Heights to Syria.)

 

Amos 9:14-15 - "I will bring back the captives of My people Israel; They shall build the waste cities and inhabit them; They shall plant vineyards and drink wine from them; They shall also make gardens and eat fruit from them. I will plant them in their land, and no longer shall they be pulled up from the land I have given them,' says the Lord your God."

 

Jeremiah 6:14 - "They have also healed the hurt of My people slightly, saying, 'Peace, peace!' When there is no peace."

Israeli Opposition leader Benjamin Netanyahu of Likud has come out swinging against Prime Minister Ehud Olmert's new peace initiative with Syria, warning on Thursday that the diplomatic gambit would place the strategic Golan Heights in Iran's hands.

 

TOURISTS FLOCK TO ISRAEL
   

Nearly 1 million tourists arrived in Israel during the first four months of 2008, an increase of 43% year-on-year, according to the Israel Tourism Ministry. Travel to Israel surged 25% last year, to 2.3 million visitors, nearly one-quarter of whom hailed from the U.S. (Business Week)

GEN. PETRAEUS TO RECOMMEND

 

Army Gen. David H. Petraeus, the top U.S. commander in Iraq, said that he expects to recommend additional cuts in U.S. troop levels there this fall. Petraeus said he would assess conditions before his departure in September, when he is scheduled to take over the U.S. Central Command. "My sense is I will be able to make a recommendation at that time for further reductions," Petraeus said at a Senate Armed Services Committee hearing yesterday on his nomination to the post that would put him in charge of U.S. military operations from the Horn of Africa to Central Asia."
